Marine Rescue honours Karen Lowry

NSW Marine Rescue Sussex Inlet’s Karen Lowry has been honoured on the night she announced she would stand down as Unit Commander.

Karen became Sussex Inlet Unit Commander in June 2020.

She has previously held roles as Roster and PR Officer at the unit.

Her husband Shane is also a volunteer at the unit.

Karen is a co-founder/organiser of the Marine Rescue NSW Women’s Forum.

In 2022, Karen was named Marine Rescue NSW Officer of the Year at the Rotary NSW Emergency Services Community Awards.

On Monday night (27 November), Karen is stood down as Unit Commander for personal reasons but will remain as an active member of the unit.

Glenn Wright, who has been joint Deputy Unit Commander, will be promoted to Unit Commander.

Tony Pollard, who has been joint Deputy Unit Commander, will now be the sole Deputy Unit Commander.

Marine Rescue NSW Deputy Commissioner Darren Schott was at last night’s unit meeting and on behalf of MRNSW Commissioner Alex Barrell present Karen with a Commissioner’s Citation which a highly regarded award.

Karen is the first person in the unit’s history to receive a Commissioner’s Citation.
