Tangled humpback set free from ropes

A Humpback Whale, entangled in rope off Wollongong’s Five Islands group early on Saturday, is today swimming free.

After hours of painstaking efforts the whale was cut loose from the lines, by the NSW NPWS’ whale disentanglement team at about 4pm.

That team was assisted by Marine Rescue NSW volunteers on board Port Kembla 31 and Shellharbour 30.

An estimated 40,000 Humpback Whales are currently migrating along the New South Wales South Coast to Australia’s warmer northern waters to mate and calve.
