Ceremony Set for Thursday, 22 May
Wollongong’s world champion, Alex Volkanovski, will be officially honoured with the Keys to the City this Thursday evening, 22 May, at Crown Street Mall stage.
It’s a long-awaited celebration for the local hero who has made his mark on the world stage in mixed martial arts.

A Champion from the South Coast
Volkanovski, known to fans as “The Great”, is the current UFC Featherweight Champion. He has defended his title multiple times and is widely considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Despite his international fame, he has always stayed connected to his roots in Wollongong and the Illawarra region.
More Than Just a Fighter
Volkanovski’s journey from local rugby league player to UFC champion is inspiring. But it’s not just about what he’s done in the octagon.
He’s also known for giving back to the community, training with young athletes, supporting local events, and being a role model to many.

Mayor: “A Role Model for Our City”
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery says the city is proud to honour Volkanovski.
“Alex is more than a world champion, he’s a role model, a leader, and a proud Wollongong local,” the Mayor said.
“The Keys to the City is our way of recognising everything he’s achieved, and the way he’s represented our city on the world stage.”

Public Welcome to Attend
The ceremony will take place at the Crown Street Mall stage on Thursday evening. There will be live entertainment, a formal presentation, and a chance for fans to hear from Volkanovski himself.
Locals are encouraged to come down, show their support, and celebrate this proud moment together.

Volkanovski: “This Means the World to Me”
Speaking ahead of the event, Volkanovski said he’s honoured to receive the Keys to the City.
“Wollongong made me who I am,” he said.
“To be recognised like this by my own community means the world to me. I can’t wait to celebrate this moment with everyone who’s supported me along the way.”
