Young people from across the Southern Highlands have put forward ideas on issues ranging from affordable housing to environmental protection at the 2026 Wingecarribee Youth Forum.

Hosted by Wingecarribee Shire Council, the annual forum brought together high school students from across the shire to discuss local challenges, develop solutions and engage directly with decision-makers.

Erin Foley said the event highlighted the important role young people play in shaping the future of the Southern Highlands.

“From affordable housing and wellbeing to protecting the environment and strengthening community connections, discussions at the forum showed just how deeply young people care about the future of the Southern Highlands,” she said.

Students heard from keynote speaker Julia Zemiro and took part in leadership and skills-building activities throughout the day.

The forum also featured a question-and-answer session with Rose Jackson, Carol Berry and Erin Foley, giving participants an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about how government works.

Working in groups, students developed ideas aimed at improving their communities before presenting them to a panel of local leaders and decision-makers, including Wendy Tuckerman MP, Judy Hannan MP and Councillor Heather Champion.

The annual forum is a key initiative under the Young Highlands 2025-2029 Plan and is designed to encourage young people to take an active role in civic life and community decision-making. Ideas generated during the event will help inform future council discussions and community initiatives.
